Gran Dualità: An Architectural Self-Portrait
Digital collage, 20"*10"
du·al·i·ty
/d(y)o͞oˈalədē/
noun
1. an instance of opposition or contrast between two concepts or two aspects of something; a dualism.
The Grand Duality explores the possibility of using architectural drawing as a medium for self expression. The piece is a collage of four of Piranesi’s drawings as well as one from Gaspari. I chose to use Roman antiquity drawings due to the details and textures, which digital modeling and illustrations can’t often depict such epicness. The drawings are specifically selected to represent and spark discussions on the duality of both architecture and humanity. It is intentional throughout the piece to create contrasts whether through spatial organizations or context. In order to amplify the already existing monumentality, I added additional midground and background towards the one-point perspective vanishing point as well as partitioned the horizon line and expanded the focal length to fit in more content and enlarge the scale of the space.
