The Icon
Spectacular's Weekend Competition 2023 First Place / Team Member: Shravan Arun, Wyatt Beard
Throughout history, Lollapalooza has been a festival defined by its pursuit for the most extraordinary and captivating experiences. The Icon is a temporary pavilion that aims to further this tradition with annual festival goers and the many communities of Chicago.
Assembled by iconic abstractions of the city, the installation provides shade, rest, nodes of gathering, and scenery at the intersection of Lollapalooza’s primary stages. In addition to standing as a beacon for the festival, the structure is constructed of modular building blocks made from recycled and upcycled materials. The pink polycarbonate panels are made from 100% recycled beverage bottles and the solid panels are fabricated with bio-mass particle boards.
Furthering the festival’s sustainability initiative, the Icon will be disassembled into individual units and be given back to the neighborhoods of Chicago after the event. The unique building blocks extend the utility of the Icon into hyper-local anchors for play, respite, and performance. Every year, these pieces make their way back to Lollapalooza and are reassembled to form the Icon once again. In each of its future formations, the Icon reflects the values of Lollapalooza and those of the city itself.
